Sweetwater Fast Facts

There are 84.76 miles of paved streets in the city.
There are 17 bridges within city limits.
The population according to the 2020 U.S. Census is 10,622.
Elvis Presley performed at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium on June 8, 1955.
NFL Hall of Fame and TCU football player Sammy Baugh went to Newman High School and played for the Sweetwater Mustang football team.
Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, who led the 1934 posse that tracked and killed Bonnie & Clyde, and his brother Gus had a pistol fight on October 1, 1917 in Sweetwater with Gee McMeans. The former Ranger and sheriff of Ector County was killed.
Former University of Texas swim coach Tex Robertson was born in Sweetwater.
Clyde "Bulldog" Turner graduated from Sweetwater High School. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Joe Banyard is a former NFL player who graduated from Sweetwater High School. He played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, and Buffalo Bills.

Parks & Recreation

The City of Sweetwater maintains five parks/recreation areas for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Booker T. Washington Park is located at 301 Robert Lee Street. It features a playground and shaded picnic areas.

Fraley Park is located at 601 West Alabama Avenue. It features a lighted baseball/softball field, an outdoor basketball court, picnic areas, a playground area, restrooms, shaded picnic areas, and tennis courts.

Jones Park is located at 1201 Jennie Street. It features a lighted baseball/softball field, an outdoor basketball court, shaded picnic areas, a playground area, and restrooms.

Newman Park is located at 100 Jack Hazard Drive. It features a 0.25 mile exercise trail with exercise stations, lighted baseball/softball fields, pickleball courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an updated playground area, restrooms, roping arenas, shaded picnic areas, trailer facilities, and the Mustang Harbor Splash Pad.

The Lake Sweetwater Park is located at 200 FM 2015. It features an amphitheater, beach area, boat ramp, concessionaire, golf course, overnight camping areas, pavilion, playground area, restrooms, and trailer facilities.

Aquatics

The City of Sweetwater owns, maintains, and operates an Olympic-size swimming pool. The Municipal Pool is at 1702 Elm Street. It is staffed by a pool manager and lifeguards are on duty at all times when the pool is open to the public.

Closed Monday for cleaning and preventative maintenance

The City of Sweetwater also owns and maintains the Mustang Harbor Splash Pad. The Splash Pad is open from dawn until dusk and features a slide, large water bucket, and water play area from babies and toddlers. There are no lifeguards on duty at the Splash Pad and parents are asked to supervise their children at all times. The Mustang Harbor Splash Pad is located inside Newman Park.
