Nestled in the heart of Nolan County, Sweetwater is more than just a place on the map—it's a community where tradition meets progress. Sweetwater is situated conveniently on Interstate 20, with Abilene 45 miles to the east and Big Spring 68 miles to the west.

Sweetwater has a rich history, serving as county seat since 1881 and officially becoming a city in 1902. Governed by a dedicated five-member council, led by Mayor Jim McKenzie, we operate as a home-rule city under Texas State Law.

Our team, led by City Manager David A. Vela, consists of 140 passionate employees committed to serving our residents professionally and respectfully. We operate under a council-manager form of government, governed  by our City Charter, which was updated by a special election on November 13, 2018.

From our humble beginnings to today, Sweetwater has embraced change while staying true to our core values. In 2017, our staff and council crafted our mission, vision, and values, which guide us in everything we do.

Whether you're a lifelong resident or new to our town, you'll find that Sweetwater is a place where everyone is welcome and community spirit thrives. We're excited to have you join us.
