- Elvis Presley performed at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium on June 8, 1955.
- NFL Hall of Fame and TCU football player Sammy Baugh went to Newman High School and played for the Sweetwater Mustang football team.
- Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, who led the 1934 posse that tracked and killed Bonnie & Clyde, and his brother Gus had a pistol fight on October 1, 1917 in Sweetwater with Gee McMeans. The former Ranger and sheriff of Ector County was killed.
- Former University of Texas swim coach Tex Robertson was born in Sweetwater.
- Clyde "Bulldog" Turner graduated from Sweetwater High School. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
